Rivers & Lakes
Rivers
Bulgaria is a country that has many large rivers flowing from its high mountain ranges through mountainous relief forming incredibly beautiful river gorges and defiles, as well as through fertile farmlands in order in the end to empty themselves in other bigger rivers or seas in Bulgaria or neighbouring countries like Greece and Turkey. The majority of these rivers are tributaries to the colossal river Danube, or they flow through the country and out into the Aegean Sea.

Rivers in Bulgaria have always had an important role in the history and development of the country as most cities, towns, or small villages are situated on the banks of rivers or have a river flowing through them. This is due to early settlements like the Thracian civilisation where the water from the rivers was extremely important to food production during these times. Some of the major Bulgarian rivers are: Iskar (368.0 km), Tundzha (349.5 km), Maritsa (321.6 km), Ossum (341.0 km), Strouma (290.0 km), Yantra (285.5 km), Kamchiya (244.5 km), Arda (241.3 km), Louda Kamchiya (200.9 km) and Roussenski Lom (196.9 km), among which only the Danube is a navigable river and forms the northern border of the country.
