Mountains & Peaks
Half of the territory of Bulgaria is mountainous with altitude of most of the mountains exceeding 1,600 m. The best-known mountain ranges are Rila (highest peak: Mussala - 2,925 m.), Pirin (highest peak: Vihren - 2,914 m.), Stara Planina also known as the Balkan range (highest peak: Botev - 2,376 m.), and the Rhodope Mountains (highest peak: Golyam Perelik - 2,191 m.) as well as Vitosha Mountain (highest peak: Cherni Vrah - 2,291 m.).
The Bulgarian mountains are easily accessible and the presence of towns and villages in their outskirts as well as in their interior displaying the authentic Bulgarian spirit and hospitality, gives an opportunity for receiving and accommodating tourists at village houses. There are numerous alpine formations in the Bulgarian mountains: caves, rocks, and gorges. They also attract visitors for all kinds of mountain tourism. Moreover, hundreds of tracks have been marked, most of them leading to important historic and cultural places. All these components make the mountains of Bulgaria attractive tourist destinations.
