Kurdzhali Pyramids

The earthly pyramids of Kurdzhali are situated to the northeast of the town of Kurdzhali, along the slopes of the Eastern Rhodopi Mountain. The most beautiful group of pyramids, known as the Stony Wedding, lies near the village of Zimzelen, proclaimed a natural landmark in 1974. Taking up an area of 50da, these magnificent natural creations reach a height of 10m and display various forms such as ones resembling mushrooms, human figures, flowers, animals, obelisks, etc.

Many of them variegated in different colors, pink, yellow, rusty red, the Kurdzhali Pyramids have been formed in volcanic and sediment rocks. For this reason they differ from the Melnik and Stob earthy pyramids which have originated in sandy conglomerate sediments. The rocks made of pure tuffs are easily deformed unlike the ones mixed with metallic oxides which are significantly harder and more stable. The different coloring of the Kurdzhali Pyramids is namely due to these metallic oxides that mix with the pure tuffs and under certain weather conditions create the stunning color patterns of the beautiful rock formations.
