Belogradchik Rocks

The Belogradchik Rocks in Bulgaria are fantastic rock figures reaching a height of 200 m and forming a strip 30km long and 3 km wide, situated in the western part of the Fore Balkan, near the town of Belogradchik. The very name of the Rocks comes from the name of the nearby town of Belogradchik. The Belogradchik Rocks have been shaped by rains, moulded by rivers and weathered by winds for more than 200 million years, trasforming the stone into wonderful figures. Some of the fantastic shapes that this miracle of nature displays are: frozen castles, fortresses, palaces, silhouettes of people, racing chariots, birds and animals, ships, mushrooms, obelisks, coaches and towers. Some of the most remarkable and unforgettable stone sculptures are: the Pine Stone, Adam and Eve, the Sphinx, the Schoolgirl, the Nun, the Bear, the Mushrooms, Madonna, the Horseman, etc.

Also, on the top of a high hill there is a real fortress built by the Romans during the 2nd century and later stabilized by the Bulgarians, which is one of the best preserved fortresses in Bulgaria. All of these majestic formations of the Belogradchik rock complex are organized into four major groups. To the east lies the Falkovska group with the imposing Momina Skala, a huge stone resembling the head of a young girl. The second group of rocks by the name of “Lipenitza”is located to the east of the town, the most attractive rocks here are the “Dinozavarskoto” (the Dinosaur's) and the “Latinskoto” (the Latin) citadel. The most imposing of the four is the Central group. In weather conditions of strong winds, visitors can hear from the top of the Kukuvitsa (the cuckoo) rock sounds reminding of the songs of a cuckoo. The western group is called the Zbegovska group. Its incredible composition of troughs, rock bridges, towers, palaces and many other figures make the visitor go throught an unforgettable experience. The Belogradchik Rocks were proclaimed natural landmark in 1942.
